Can we finance this truck?

Inca Post Client - Truck Finance

We get asked this question all the time.

And the answer is – yes.

At Stacked Finance, it’s our job to guide you through the process so we can get you the best truck finance deal possible, regardless of your situation.

But getting you the best deal depends on factors like the make and model of the truck you need, how quickly you need it, your business financial position, personal and business credit score, loan structure, tax considerations, and more.

We consider four primary factors when helping our clients secure their vehicles quickly.

1. Truck Details

When it comes to financing a truck (and a trailer) there are hundreds of options to choose from.

Each specific factor will impact the available lenders, interest rate, repayment options, and the process of verifying and obtaining the vehicle. These can include

  • Truck make and model (e.g. Volvo FH 16 600)
  • Whether the truck is new or used
  • The condition of the truck (does it have a healthy resale value?)
  • Age of the truck at the end of the loan term
  • Dealer vs private sale

2. Loan Structure

Most businesses will want to obtain their asset as soon as possible to start earning income with it. This is especially important for a truck. However, the speed at which you need the asset will impact the type of loan you will apply for.

For example, if you need a truck loan within 24hrs you’ll want to move ahead with a no-doc or low-doc loan. They come with rigid criteria (like a fixed matrix) and higher rates. They also rely heavily on your credit score to be approved.

Here are some questions to think about:

  • How fast do you need the vehicle?
  • Do you intend on leaving a deposit?
  • Do you prefer to retain cash or do you want lower repayments?
  • Which loan term makes sense for your business?
  • Do you want to own the truck from day one?
  • Do you want to own the truck after the loan term?

There are loads of questions to be asked in the early stages of applying for your loan. This is why we recommend booking a free 1-1 discovery call so our experienced team can guide you through the steps.

After you’ve answered these questions you’ll likely choose one of the following loan types:

Chattel mortgage: Your business owns the asset (i.e. truck) immediately with the lender holding a mortgage as security. You can claim tax deductions for GST, depreciation, and interest.

Commercial hire purchase: Your business rents the truck from the lender with regular payments until ownership transfers at the end of the term. There are also tax benefits for GST, interest, and depreciation.

Truck finance lease: Your business rents the truck from the lender without gaining ownership. You can also deduct lease payments as operating expenses, with the option to purchase at the end of the term.

Operating lease: This is for businesses that prefer to keep the asset off the balance sheet. Your business rents the truck, and maintenance is included. You return it at the end of the term and can deduct payments as operating expenses.

3. Business Financials & Income Verification

When it comes to the financials and income verification lenders are typically trying to determine if you can reliably make repayments. They want to know that your business is doing well enough to handle the debt on your truck. This helps them determine what loan terms they can give you, like interest rates, deposits, and repayment schedules.

The type of loan you apply for (e.g. low doc or full doc) will depend on the type of documentation you will need to provide.

For a full documentation loan (full-doc) lenders may ask for business tax returns, balance sheets, profit and loss statements, BAS statements, bank statements, personal and business credit scores, etc.

You may only need to provide your personal and business credit score for low documentation loans (low-doc) or no documentation loans (no-doc). In some cases, bank statements are not even required.

Every lender will have their own product guide and policy that determines which documents they require to access specific products, rates, and terms.

4. Tax Considerations

Tax implications are not the first thing we consider, but we believe they are important.

They can seriously impact the bottom line and make your decision

For example, with a chattel mortgage, you can claim GST upfront on the truck purchase (which means getting a chunk of cash back quickly), plus you can deduct depreciation and interest payments at tax time.

This can save you thousands each year and improve cash flow.

We’ve partnered with a team of accountants who help us review your needs and make the most informed decision.

So whether you know exactly what you want or need some guidance, Stacked Finance can support you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is truck finance?

Put simply, truck finance is a loan that helps you get the truck you want without having to fork out the cash amount upfront. It’s the exact same as any other vehicle or equipment finance.

However, it’s designed for commercial vehicles and comes with other benefits like tax deductions, competitive asset costs, and flexible repayment options.

Whether you’re after a single rig or a whole fleet, our team can help you keep your business moving while managing your cash flow.

Which types of trucks do you finance?

We can help you finance most heavy vehicles used to generate income and have a re-sale value. These include:

  • New trucks
  • Used trucks
  • Prime movers
  • Flatbed trucks
  • Semi-trailers
  • Concrete trucks
  • Tankers
  • Garbage trucks
  • Mobile cranes
  • Livestock transporters
  • Water trucks
  • Tow trucks

We can also finance any common attachments including trailers.

Can you source a truck at a better price?

Yes, we often help our clients secure cars and trucks at better rates than the dealerships can.

How can I get the best truck finance deal?

If you’re reading this then you’re already on your way to getting the best truck finance deal in Australia. Landing the best deal comes down to a few key factors – getting the right price on your truck, structuring your loan appropriately, accessing the lowest rates and best terms, and working with a broker to support you on all the finer details.

Here’s a list of common advice we give our clients:

  • Shop around with multiple lenders without hitting your credit file (never settle on one)
  • Get as much paperwork ready as possible (tax returns, financials, driver’s license, etc). Our team will tell you whether you’re better off going full doc, low doc, or no doc before applying.
  • Keep your credit score healthy since it’s a major factor in your eligibility and rate.
  • Consider a larger deposit if possible – this often leads to better rates but it is not required.
  • Look at the total cost, not just the monthly payments.
  • Chat with an asset finance broker – they often have access to deals you won’t find on your own.
What’s the process for buying a truck from a private seller?

Financing a vehicle from a private vendor comes with some additional verification steps.

This means we may need to provide the lender with the following:

  • Proof of identity from the seller
  • Proof of ownership of the vehicle (registration letter, etc)
  • Photo verification of the VIN or engine number, license plate, condition of the truck, etc
  • In some cases, the lender may require a mechanical inspection
What should I look out for in a truck loan broker?

When choosing a truck loan broker in Australia there are some essentials you’ll need to be aware of. Firstly, all brokers should be FBAA or MFAA-accredited brokers. Secondly, they should also have the relevant qualifications and industry experience. On top of this, a good broker should:

  • Have close relationships with multiple lenders, not just their preferred lenders
  • Take time to understand your business, goals, and truck specifications
  • Be upfront about all rates, fees, processes, and charges
  • Know the ins and outs of different finance structures (e.g. chattel mortgage vs commercial lease)
  • Understand the tax implications for your business of each loan structure
  • Fights to get you the best deal possible and conditional approval ASAP
  • Understand current ATO position on tax deductions and other related initiatives

Most importantly, they should speak your language – if the broker can’t explain how the loan works without using fancy jargon, keep looking.

How can I get the lowest repayments for my truck?

Reducing the repayments on your truck loan comes down to a few core factors:

  • Having a larger deposit to reduce your loan size
  • Finding a better deal on your truck
  • Extending your loan term (e.g. from 5 years to 7 years)
  • Getting a better rate (which our team will help with)
Do I need truck insurance?

The short answer is yes!

We believe comprehensive truck insurance is mandatory.

Beyond meeting basic legal requirements, comprehensive truck insurance protects your business investment and livelihood if something goes wrong. Most lenders also require proof of insurance before approving finance.

Can I finance a truck if I’m a sole trader?

Yes – sole traders can also get truck loans fairly easily.

However, you will likely get the best deal if you have property or some other asset to guarantee your loan. On top of this, it’s unlikely that you will be able to receive the same tax advantages as a proprietary limited company.

Can I still get a truck loan if I have a bad credit score?

Yes, just because you have a bad credit score does not mean you are ineligible.

Our team specialises in helping you purchase a truck with the right loan even with a bad credit score or credit history. Please keep in mind that a bad credit score tends to attract higher interest rates and less favourable finance solutions.

Please schedule a 20-minute discovery call with our team today to learn how we can help you.

Which types of truck finance options are available?

There are various types of truck financing options that our team can help you with.

However, the main ones include:

Chattel Mortgages: This is the most popular choice for most businesses. With this type of loan, you own the truck from day one, however, the lender has a mortgage over the asset. The good news is that you can claim GST upfront and take advantage of tax deductions on interest payments and depreciation.

Finance Leases: Another popular option is a finance lease. This is an arrangement in which you rent the truck from the lender with set monthly payments. It’s a great option if you want lower monthly payments and you plan on upgrading regularly. The payments are generally tax-deductible but you will not own the asset (i.e. won’t be on the balance sheet).

Commercial Hire Purchases: This is similar to a chattel mortgage although you won’t own the truck until the final payment (also won’t be on the balance sheet until the final payment). It still has fixed monthly payments, and payments can be tax deductible.

Operating Leases: This arrangement means the lender owns and maintains the truck while you make rental payments. It’s only ideal if you want to avoid maintenance costs (plus other expenses) and regularly upgrade your vehicles.
